It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Tony Meyer ’49 passed away on Saturday evening, April 25, surrounded by his loving family.
For more than 75 years, he faithfully served the College of Charleston as a student and basketball player; as an educator, coach and athletics director; as vice president of alumni relations and Executive Secretary Emeritus of the Alumni Association; and as an inspiration to thousands of students and alumni. In 1984, Tony established one of the College’s premier student leadership organizations, the Student Alumni Associates, and remained actively engaged with them long after his retirement in 1994. An icon of the College, Tony was very much involved on campus and cheering on his beloved Cougars athletics teams until just a few weeks ago when college events ended due to the pandemic.
He leaves behind three sons, Anthony J. Meyer Jr. ’88, M. Kevin Meyer ’89 (Dr. Karen Mitro Meyer ’91), and Joseph B. Meyer ’92 (Eleanor Washington Meyer). His grandchildren are Patrick Meyer ’23, Ryan Meyer, Emory Meyer, Helen Meyer, and JB Meyer.
The family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Tony Meyer Scholarship fund, which is awarded through the Alumni Association to children of alumni. Checks may be made out to the College of Charleston Foundation, noting it is for the Tony Meyer Scholarship, and mailed to College of Charleston Foundation, 66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424.
