An Investment in the Future

Senior Barrett Hawkins and Hilton Head oncologist Gary Thomas ’83 share a love of medicine. They are both problem-solvers and enjoy figuring out the very best path forward for a patient.

Barrett, majoring in biology with a minor in neuroscience, is the 2013 J. Gorman ‘43 and Gladys Thomas (Gary’s parents) Memorial Alumni Scholarship recipient. She participates in the Scrubs program at Roper Hospital, is a campus emergency medical technician and is president of Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Society. “Dr. Thomas not only has invested in me and my future, he’s also a really good resource, giving me advice about the medical schools and MCATs,” says Hawkins.

Thomas says he’s investing in the future of medicine.

“My intention with this scholarship and my relationships with the recipients is just one opportunity to be connected to the next generation, the next leaders in medicine,” says Thomas. “I am only helping these students move forward and be successful. And at the same time, I am paying it back for all the College did for me. It is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.”

In that sense, you could say that Thomas, too, is a beneficiary of his own estate gift.
